Abstract In Bône (now Annaba, Algeria), the “cours” is one of the most emblematic urban forms of the city. In this paper, we retrace the history of the “cours’” establishment to illustrate the dynamic of French colonial urbanism in Algeria. The primacy of this arrangement was made clear through reading the discussions content that surrounded this unique work in many aspects. The development of the “cours” has changed the landscape of the traditional city; it is also one of the signs that announced the beginnings of municipalism in Bône which is often associated with other mayors than mayor Lacombe, who had been an active agent in the “cours” creation. Mayor Auguste Lacombe managed to push through his original plan (1848): “cours” and plots around and on the border. More than this adoption of his idea, Lacombe’s contribution lies in the renewal imposed on the discussions between his services and military technology.
