In January 1842, the French Jew Alphonse Ratisbonne entered a small church in Romeas a tourist. A fewminutes later hewas prostrate on thefloor of a side chapel, weeping, having been overcome by a vision of the VirginMary. He left the church as a believing Christian, and he received the sacrament of baptism eleven days later. He spent the rest of his life making his mystical experience available to others, especially Jews, often in ways that his critics described as coercive. People touched by his story joined fellow seekers in confraternities, wore and exchanged blessedmedallions, and some ultimately professed the vows of his religious order, Notre Dame de Sion, to work for the salvation of Jews. Ratisbonne’s story mobilized these individuals as a bulwark against a secularizing society and provided them with tools for reproducing his experience of divine power in the midst of modern urban life. Ratisbonne’s experience is hardly unknown. He was famous in his lifetime as the modern Saint Paul, confronted by God on his road to Damascus, and historians since have been similarly fascinated by his story. Referring to Ratisbonne as the “new Saul” linked him to Christianity’s earliest era and suggested that he was somehow out of step with the nineteenth century, that in being knocked off his feet he had somehow also been knocked out of his era. Many of Ratisbonne’s followers appreciated the notion that he had turned his back on the modern

(Alphonse Ratisbonne)
