Across the Atlantic world, the construction of liberal and republican political systems and societies was accompanied by the need to define the gender dimensions of the new order. Just what the age of revolution meant for women has been a longstanding question.Did it kill off a recognized public role for—at least—elitewomen, or did women continue to have a public role despite their banishment from the formal institutions of politics? Were the new societies structured around a strict public/ private dichotomy in which women were consigned to the purdah of domesticity, or were their public spheres sufficiently capacious for women to stake out a domain, either as individuals or collectively? With regard to Spain, there is now a substantial and sophisticated literature that has given us a much more textured and complex picture of the creation of a liberal state and society there during the first half of the nineteenth century. The old vision of a failed and backward country has been replaced by one that sees a real liberal revolution that brought about a profound and meaningful rupture from the ancien régime.
