In the first three decades of the twentieth century, the tiny French holdings in India were peripheral to French empire by all economic, political, military, and demographic measures. In this period, French colonialism was at its most globally expansive, with growing settlements in Africa and Southeast Asia, but the French colonies in South Asia were a decidedly marginal project. Nevertheless, French India played an outsized role in the imperial imagination. Nowhere was this discrepancy between the material and representational importance of French empire in South Asia on clearer display than in the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris, where a French India exhibit held a place of honor and a host of attendant publications and events positioned French India, and particularly French India’s history in the eighteenth century, at their center. Why did the French colonies in India, which most colonial administrators and historians at the time considered a profound failure of the imperial project, earn such a central place in the exposition, on par with the displays devoted to central sites of ongoing and ambitious French empire, such as Algeria, Indochina, and French West Africa? This study provides an answer to this mysterious incongruity between French India’s marginal position in the realm of politics and economy and its centrality in the sphere of colonial representation. It demonstrates that the lavish French India pavilion in the Colonial Exposition represented a much longer preoccupation with French India’s past: it was the culmination of a process that unfolded over
