will be useful in college and graduate classrooms. I hope that the volume’s complex, nuanced discussion of feminisms in Japan will make its way into more popular understandings. For example, much of Anglophone media has highlighted Prime Minister Abe Shinzō’s supposed “feminism,” but the editors draw attention to the conservative ideology that guides Abe and his colleagues, something that English translations hide—indeed, the editors point out that women’s centers have in recent years been “repurposed” as “men and women’s cooperative participation centers” (danjo kyōdō sankaku sentā), yet the English translation is the misleading “gender equality centers” (p. 8). Reading this book about Japanese feminisms in the moment of #MeToo and #TimesUp made it especially timely. There is no sign that interest in feminism will wane anytime soon. I do not typically turn to bumper stickers to end a book review, but I saw one recently while driving in western Massachusetts—home of two Seven Sisters colleges and close to the original site of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians—that seems apt: “I’ll be post feminist in a post patriarchy.”
