With health literacy in the limelight as our nation focuses on improving patient experiences and outcomes, Dr. Terri Ann Parnell’s book, Health Literacy in Nursing: Providing Person-Centered Care, could not have come at a more opportune time. The book brings clarity to the significance of health literacy in patient care. In healthcare today, our country’s diverse population is faced with multiple health disparities. When taking a closer look at these disparities, the concept of health literacy emerges as a common thread that is intertwined throughout all cultures, demographics, environments, and socioeconomic statuses within our population. Health literacy deeply impacts our patients’ ability to access healthcare, manage their disease processes and achieve optimal level of functioning. Understanding the significance of health literacy in patient care and implementing interventions to improve patient education strategies are essential to the practice of nursing. In order to do this, nurses must create a culture of teaching and learning that meets our patients’ individual health literacy needs. This can only be accomplished by cultivating the health literacy skills of our nurses. Health Literacy in Nursing: Providing Person-Centered Care sheds light on how to cultivate these ever-important skills, providing a clear and comprehensive overview of health literacy, and offering a myriad of strategies and interventions for nurses. Although, as the title suggests, the book is intended for nurses, it has implications for a much broader audience of health professionals. First, in the preface, the author welcomes nurses to use the book as a guide, arousing interest by providing succinct descriptions of the topics within each of the book chapters. The chapters are organized into 4 main sections with each of the 15 chapter titles serving as easily accessible resources. The format and length of the chapters are uniform and evenly distributed. Furthermore, each and every chapter ends with an elaborate list of references, a valuable resource for any
