Objective: Intimate partner violence (IPV) adversely affects the lives of many different groups. We examined the experiences of IPV among African American men and the meaning men gave to such experiences in their communities. Method: Using a multisystems life course perspective, we analyzed qualitative data from a community-based participatory action research project that included 19 middle- to upper-income African American men (ages 24–49) living in a southern town in the United States. Results: Participants’ perceptions of IPV were influenced by historical and sociocultural experiences of perceived oppression and violence in America, familial interactions, multimedia messages, and societal interactions that were perceived as unfair and unjust. Study participants offered recommendations for strengthening IPV prevention and intervention efforts spanning the life course of both males and females in African American communities. Conclusions: Embedding a life course perspective in a participatory action framework provided a contextually grounded theoretical perspective and methodological approach that led to a clearer understanding of IPV among African American men and communities. It is vital that the experiences of African American men be more fully considered in efforts to prevent and treat IPV in African American communities.
