Relevancejudgmentplaysanextremelysignificantroleininformationretrieval.Thisstudyinvestigates the differences between American users and Chinese users in relevance judgment during the informationretrievalprocess.384setsofrelevancescoreswith50scoresineachsetwerecollected from16Americanusersand16Chineseusersastheyjudgedretrievalrecordsfromtwomajorsearch enginesbasedon24predefinedsearchtasksfrom4domaincategories.Statisticalanalysesreveal thattherearesignificantdifferencesbetweenAmericanassessorsandChineseassessorsinrelevance judgments.SignificantgenderdifferencesalsoappearwithinboththeAmericanandtheChinese assessorgroups.Thestudyalsorevealedsignificantinteractionsamongcultures,genders,andsubject categories.Thesefindingscanenhancetheunderstandingofculturalimpactoninformationretrieval andcanassistinthedesignofeffectivecross-languageinformationretrievalsystems.
