negotiate their own self-conceptions centering racial or ethnic identity, particularly when we have the data showing that majority of commissioning parents seek Indian egg donors. This is not to say that Deomampo does not bring to our attention that surrogates and egg donors struggle and find ways to attain value and recognition for the labor they produce, in spite of being exposed to demeaning racialization by upper-class medical doctors, and stigmatization of extended community and family members who generally disapprove of such work. But given the fact that racial imaginary is a dominant framework, we don’t get to know much about how surrogacy experiences stretch the women’s own self-conceptions of belonging to a certain class and caste group. Nevertheless, Deomampo does a brilliant job of giving a comprehensive account of the way racial reproductive imaginaries marginalize the experiences of women who do the labor in the global surrogacy markets. This is both a theoretically engaged and ethnographically rich book that brings much needed focus on the human and social institutions that underlie the surrogacy markets. One of the lasting impacts of the book will be for us to see that colonial and contemporary legacies of racial distinctions end up dwarfing and diminishing the transformative potentials of reimagining group affiliations and identities that assisted reproductive technology has granted to us.

Rasim Özgür Dönmez
