Reflecting on the origins of cultural populism, the legacy of the Birmingham School and the continued influence but narrow use of the work of Raymond Williams, Jim explores what is at stake in the critical analysis of popular tastes, including a discussion of Derry Girls, Ralph Miliband’s forgotten concept of ‘de-subordination’, and the new forms of cultural and political populism associated with Brexit.
