In the final contribution to the special issue ‘Cultural Populism in New Populist Times’, Marie Moran interviews Jim McGuigan on the legacy and continued relevance of the concept of cultural populism. Here, Jim reviews the earlier argument of his 1992 book Cultural Populism, and makes the case for the necessity of fostering what he terms a ‘critical populism’ in the era of neoliberal capitalism. Reflecting on the origins of cultural populism, the legacy of the Birmingham School and the continued influence but narrow use of the work of Raymond Williams, Jim explores what is at stake in the critical analysis of popular tastes, including a discussion of Derry Girls, Ralph Miliband’s forgotten concept of ‘de-subordination’, and the new forms of cultural and political populism associated with Brexit.
