The quality of the contributions is uniformly high, authoritative and original, and sometimes provocative (e.g. Duchastel and Laberge describe as ‘obsolete’ the paradigmatic oppositions between qualitative and quantitative approaches, although they also admit that such oppositions are still ‘strongly advocated in the body of scientific literature’ (p. 43)). All contributions are not just methodologically but also theoretically and historically oriented. Two constant themes running throughout the volume are that quantitative and qualitative analyses as well as contexts are indispensable considerations in gaining a more objective understanding of the formation of discourse. Its international and transdisciplinary outlooks will interest scholars in discourse studies, corpus linguistics, political science, sociology, among others. However, without a practical guide, it appears to be more suited to experienced researchers instead of novice beginners. It would benefit the readers if links to the tools were provided. Detailing how each tool could be applied and adding quantitative multimodal analysis and further reading lists could be considered in future editions.
