Equally, the apparently idiosyncratic experiences and behaviours of welfare service users are – through this edited collection – shown to be part of a ‘shared typical’ when it comes to those at ‘the sharp end’ of behavioural requirements and how these are formed through policy discourse, design and implementation (McIntosh and Wright, 2019). Here, chapters from Serpa and Ball are particularly important for revealing what welfare conditionality means for the practice and possibilities of behaviour change given the personal and structural constraints facing targeted groups.
