Reflecting on the life of Pamela Reynolds among the Tonga people of Zimbabwe

Nonetheless, after all has been said, Reynolds should be commended for publishing her field diary as it corrects numerous misconceptions about the Tonga in general and those in Chitenge in particular. Although her research focused on child labour, the diary elucidates, through a very impressive approach, that Reynolds’ “tale is not one of misery, for there is joy among the people and enterprise and creativity and a resilient social structure,” an aspect that is not found in the accounts of other researchers of the colonial forced removals. The diary thus encourages researchers to keep field diaries, even if it is tiring labour, for Reynolds’ demonstrates the significance of such an account.
