greater control over their destiny. Assuming that Cederström and others do not suggest a return to an arbitrary pre-Socratic world, the question of how this line of thought can be integrated in political struggle seems all the more urgent. Further elaboration of this community of joyful subjects – indeed a hopeful line of thought – would be preferable. Furthermore, and also important, Cederström’s claim that the happiness fantasy he has explored ended with Trump certainly remains to be proven. Whatever the future holds, Cederström’s way of operating in the borderland between philosophy, psychoanalysis, sociology and economics and his ability to think through the common as well as the sublime is quite impressive. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is specifically interested in critical happiness studies and to those who have a general interest in a critique of late modern capitalism, the politics of the self and the consequences of contemporary psychologising tendencies.
