Abstract

In this article, we analyze the experience of the production (or genesis) of female subjectivity within a framework of the copper mining industry in northern Chile. We choose a biographical methodology that allows us to magnify the life story of a female union leader working in a male-dominated field in Chile. The findings show that female miners are under constant tension of subordination and subversion as members and leaders of a union that, until recently, had been dominated by males. Likewise, these women have had to search for validation while working during complex periods of female emancipation characterized by, on the one hand, grants of autonomy, and on the other hand, a means for domination caused by gender and labor gaps in the workplace.
