The Australian War Memorial on London’s Hyde Park Corner (2003) was the first erected on that key ceremonial site since the 1920s. It marks Australia’s participation as a Commonwealth ally in the two world wars and the continuing close relationship between the two countries. Its origins were in the commemoration of the centenary of Australian Federation in 2000–1, but it gained added significance and geographical prominence when Australia and the United Kingdom became allies again in the ‘War on Terror’. The memorial is an interactive post-modern Denkmal, designed to be read in a number of ways, including using smartphone technology. This article describes its origins, design and rationale.
