ABSTRACT During a televised ceremony celebrating the Boston Marathon bombing heroes, Red Sox star David Ortiz used profanity in his unscripted message of support for the city. The rhetorical significance of this incident lies not just with his language, but also the reactions to it. That many deemed Ortiz's profanity inoffensive—even appropriate—prompts a reconsideration of profanity's role in civic rhetoric. This essay examines the public engagements with Ortiz's language and argues for a reconsideration of appropriate rhetorical responses to extraordinary situations.
