there are many visual representations demonstrating the emergent cultural diversity in Chinatown. Chapter 6 analyses the changes in the commercial environment, specifically the business enterprises in Chinatown during the twenty-first century, showing Chinatown as a spatial core of Asian business in Sydney. Chapter 7 draws on the concept of ‘Place Branding’ to explore how cultural identity is translated into commercial activity, using three family-owned restaurants as case studies. Furthermore, by framing Chinatown as a site of consumption, the authors detail a series of initiatives performed by Asian migrants as ‘place-making’ practices. This is followed by the survey of young students’ consumption experience in Chapter 8 and the discussion of Asian artist-led public design in Chapter 9. In summary, the book traces the ongoing transformation of Sydney’s Chinatown in all aspects – economic, political, cultural, and ideological – and how its evolution negates longstanding attitudes associated with ‘foreign’ spaces as it ‘exceeds all sense of enclosure’. As the spatial boundaries of Chinatown in Sydney become increasingly ambiguous, it is representative of a greater shift in Australian national culture away from predominantly European influences and embracing an urban form more inclusive of its diverse constituents. As the book touches on Chinatowns across the globe, it is important to note that not all Chinatowns are being through the same transition as Sydney’s. Overall, Chinatown unbound has done a great job in revealing the contemporary complexity of Sydney’s Chinatown. Significantly, it provides a novel perspective to analyse the transformation of traditional ethnic enclaves in a global context. It challenges the reader to re-evaluate the notion of ‘difference’ and explore what it means in a multicultural society wherein the boundaries between ‘them’ and ‘us’, and ‘here’ and ‘there’ have become blurred.
