ers, laid out in this stylish manner, like butterflies in some Victorian collector’s cabinet. The variety of shapes and of proportions are enjoyable in their own right, whilst the varied subtle colours of northern English stonework are nowhere shownoff to better effect. It is a feast for the eyes, and it lifts the spirit as well. Ryan’s book is cheap enough, and handsome enough, to be the ideal ‘stocking-filler’ present for the dedicated church-historian. It deserves to be the must-have Christmas present for historians of the northern English church in 2019.
