Finally, in Chapter 6, the transformative power of the ethnic experience emerges most clearly in Timpanelli’s stories. A famous cantastorie, Timpanelli weaves together tradition and modernity, orality and writing through her stories, based on Sicilian oral storytelling and folktales, making them a tool of social and gender affirmation and transformation. Her works, harking back to medieval chansons, the Brothers Grimm, Perrault and Sicilian storytellers, but also reflecting the American experience, also offer an adventure of discovery and rebirth for their female protagonists. Twenty-first century Sicily becomes the place where these women can find themselves and begin a new life of emancipation and feminist consciousness. The Heart and the Island seeks to pave the way for further studies, as it does not seek to be either a comprehensive or an exhaustive study of all Sicilian American writers.
