A Simple I-TOF Module Based on Avalanche Photodiode

This letter presents for the first time a new type of indirect time-of-flight (ToF) detection unit based on avalanche photodiode (APD) which is simple in structure and easy to integrate. Leveraging the advantages afforded by the direct ToF and indirect ToF technology, it has been verified by simulation that it has good time resolution, and the measurement results show a standard deviation of 3.17 mm at 4 m and less than 35 cm for distances up to 7.5 m. At the same time, this work proposes a new lateral APD model with a high responsivity reaching up to 4.37 A/W and low breakdown voltage of ~9.4 V.
