ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to answer two questions: At what point might the phenomenon of tourism overcrowding qualify as overtourism? And, what are the indicators that a destination manager will have to observe upstream to avoid overtourism? To answer these questions, we analyze the literature on the subject to differentiate the concept of overtourism from other similar concepts. In addition, we analyze the case of Montreal to see whether or not the destination suffers from overtourism. The results show that in Montreal (over)tourism is not yet considered a problem even though the city presents similar situations experienced by others, particularly with regard to Airbnb rentals.
