Rambutan-like Nb2O5@SHCs microspheres for improved microwave absorption performance

Rambutan-like Nb2O5 coated single-layer hollow carbon spheres (Nb2O5@SHCs) with unique morphology were synthesized by using SHCs as template via a simple hydrothermal method. The as-fabricated rambutan-like Nb2O5@SHCs presents improved electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, especially strong reflection loss (RL) and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < −10 dB). The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reaches −52 dB at the thickness of 3.25 mm, and the widest EAB is up to 5.28 GHz at a thin thickness of 2.85 mm. The improved EMW absorption capacity of Nb2O5@SHCs is mainly resulting from increased multiple reflections and scattering, strengthened interface polarization, and improved impedance matching. The rambutan-like Nb2O5@SHCs reveals great application prospects as a high-performance EMW absorbing material.
