ABSTRACT

We develop a mediated moderation model to explain how project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) standard and partnership quality interactively affect the IT outsourcing success, and whether service quality mediates their joint effect on IT outsourcing success. Conducting a survey of 118 project managers in nine Iranian IT outsourcers, the model and hypothesis are empirically tested. We find a negative moderation effect between PMBOK standard and partnership quality, showing that partnership quality’s effect on IT outsourcing success becomes weak when the level of PMBOK standard is high. More interesting, we find that this moderation effect is fully mediated by service quality, which in turn directly increases IT outsourcing success. In addition, PMBOK standard is found to negatively moderate the relationship between service quality and IT outsourcing success. These findings shed light on the complex mechanisms underlying PMBOK standard, partnership quality, and service quality in IT outsourcing success, and provide several implications in theory and practice of IT outsourcing management.

我们开发了一种中介调节模型，以解释项目管理知识体系（PMBOK）标准和合作伙伴质量如何交互影响IT外包成功，以及服务质量是否介导它们对IT外包成功的共同影响。对9个伊朗IT外包商的118位项目经理进行了调查，对模型和假设进行了实证检验。我们发现PMBOK标准与伙伴关系质量之间存在负调节作用，这表明，当PMBOK标准水平较高时，伙伴关系质量对IT外包成功的影响会减弱。更有趣的是，我们发现这种调节效果完全由服务质量来调节，这反过来直接增加了IT外包的成功率。此外，发现PMBOK标准对服务质量和IT外包成功之间的关系产生负面影响。这些发现揭示了成功实现IT外包的PMBOK标准，合作伙伴质量和服务质量的复杂机制，并为IT外包管理的理论和实践提供了一些启示。
