Editorial: The Devotion and Diversity of the Associate Editors
Ethics ( IF 10.8 ) Pub Date : 2018-10-01 , DOI: 10.1086/698763
Henry S. Richardson

I have already welcomed in this space the new editors in chief of this journal, Julia Driver and Connie Rosati, who took up this role on July 1—a historic moment for this venerable old journal. Yet it falls to me also to write this farewell editorial, since the October issue goes to press in May. (In case you’re wondering, most of the time between the assembly of the final manuscripts and publication is occupied by a thorough copyediting at the Press, which has developed a custom manual that accommodates the quirks of contemporary philosophical writing, and by careful proofreading—two important parts of the effort that goes into creating a polished final product.) There is much about this journal, and being at the helm, that I will miss. I will feel the loss of the rare vantage point I’ve occupied, surveying the fields of ethics, social philosophy, and political philosophy, which derives from screening all of the journal’s submissions—about five thousand of them in my time as the editor. Dealing with the professional and friendly staff at the University of Chicago Press has always been a pleasure. In particular, I will look back fondly on my regular interactions with our easygoing yet exacting managing editor, Joseph Muszynski—who, like his predecessor, Catherine Galko Campbell, is totally on top of the job. To two book review editors—Mark C. Murphy in my first five-year term and Mark van Roojen in my second (and continuing, now, beyond that to allow a smooth transition)—I’m thankful not so much for interaction as for the lack thereof: each of them kept this part of the operation running smoothly with admirable self-sufficiency. Above all, I am sorry to give upmy regular association with the journal’s varied and talented group of associate editors, whose attention to their painstaking and often thankless tasks is extraordinary and whose insight and incisiveness have been inspiring to me. Now, as I depart the journal, I would like to offer an envoi on the devotion and diversity of our associate editors.
