The University as a Crowd Universities in Europe are a medieval invention we owe to the Roman Catholic Church, which wemore succinctly call “the Church.”Today, they exist all around the world; they are secularized; they make up one of the major forms of the modern gathering. In 1921, Sigmund Freud studied crowd phenomena. He contrasted “natural” crowds, which form spontaneously, with “artificial” crowds, which result from an institutional constraint. Among “artificial” crowds, hementioned the Army and the Church in particular. With good reason: these institutions, at once ancient and still strong, could be found in almost all European countries. Today, this is no longer the case. One of the implicit founding principles of the Europe of Treaties is that the role of the Army should be radically cut back. Not only does the Army carry no weight in governmental decisions, it also does not even determine the little military politics some states wish to preserve. With respect to social life, the Army is more and more absent. While armies do exist, the Army, in the singular form and capitalized (the Army that carried so much weight in the Algerian War) does not exist anymore in the Schengen Area. It exists in Turkey, and this is, without a doubt, what stands in the way of
