Looking into Upper Paleolithic gear: The potential of an integrated techno-economic approach

Revealing the underlying structure of lithic assemblages is challenging. With the exception of rare favorable situations, most lithic assemblages are palimpsests that result from multiple and complex processes of accumulation. We argue that the combination of petrography, technology and use-wear in a detailed techno-economic approach permits unique insights into the structural components of an assemblage and allows the identification of different kinds of site-related gear.

The site of La Péguière, located in Southeastern France and dated to ca. 20–21 ka cal. BP is most probably a palimpsest of multiple occupations with several taphonomic and stratigraphic issues, as is typical of most Upper Paleolithic sites. In spite of that, we were able to identify both personal and situational gear. In addition, we propose an interpretation of the site’s function and its position within the mobility system of human groups.

Our results lend support to models that hypothesize a central role for personal gear in Early Epigravettian provisioning strategies and we demonstrate how specific tasks activities were anticipated by importing raw materials next to personal gear.

A broader application of the proposed integrated method would significantly increase our understanding of how lithic assemblages are structured and how they reflect past regional networks.
