It is difficult to write reflectively without the writing itself being stamped by its time-space context. We write in the context of an almost global lockdown; the political imposition--for that is what it is--of what the State of California more mellifluously calls ‘shelter-in-place’. In their homes, many are now writing the first drafts of a new context for subjective temporal reflection. In blogs, in Instagram, in web-forums and in countless other online and offline settings, they creatively use the uniqueness of the context to consider, or reconsider, what a sudden and radical irruption into the normal temporal flow of life for billions of people, actually means. Paul Virilio’s dromology theorised that gridlock is the consequence or risk of acceleration. The time-space of neoliberal globalisation accelerated the COVID-19 contagion, and lockdown has been our gridlock. In that sense gridlock (like acceleration) is a kind of temporal capture, a structural imposition that holds us in the space and time of our shelters and our own reflective and analytical capacities. And it is here, in our heads, if not our bodies, there is a kind of freedom.
