This study examines how people make moral judgments about individual efforts to reduce environmental impact. Past research suggests morality is an important driver of such efforts. But it is not known empirically whether people interpret individual-level environmental practices and impact as moral issues. Through analyses of 64 semi-structured interviews, we identify two conditions under which environmental practices and impact influence moral judgments. First, environmental impact must be part of the evaluator's moral culture. We complement and extend existing literature by demonstrating that liberals are more likely than conservatives to make moral evaluations of individual efforts to reduce environmental impact. Second, the evaluator must view the actor as behaving intentionally. People perceive high-income actors as more likely than low-income actors to intentionally reduce environmental impact and, accordingly, view high-income people engaged in green practices as more moral. We confirm the effects of environmental practices and income on the moral judgments that liberals and conservatives make using an online vignette experiment. The experiment was conducted with a nationally-representative sample of US households through NSF's Time-Sharing Experiments in the Social Sciences (TESS). We conclude by discussing implications for research on ethical consumption and politically-polarized views on environmental protection.
