“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” is a quote attributed to everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Peter Drucker. Regardless of its debated origins, the sentiment is that we do not simply have the luxury of being passive observers of the events that impact our world. Rather we must be active participants that shape them. In today’s chaotic world of pandemics and climate change, perhaps now more than ever, change is crucial if we wish to move toward a more sustainable civilization. Maybe the above quote should be adjusted to “Trying to predict the future is futile; while creating the future is imperative.” This is exactly why the establishment of our new Early Career Advisory Board is so important. It is has become increasingly clear that the future of the environmental field is continuing to evolve in scale, scope and complexity. It is imperative that Environmental Science & Technology maintains its central and essential role of leading the environmental field with impactful and relevant research for the benefit of society. To more fully realize this mission, the current editorial board has identified and engaged some of the rising stars in the field who are creating the future to serve on our inaugural Early Career Editorial Advisory Board (EC EAB, Table 1). Those who have generously committed to share their time and energy with ES&T through the ECB represent not only our current topic areas and researchers, but our aspirations for evolving the breadth and diversity of ES&T’s research and community. Those that were invited to join the ECB exemplify the broad excellence and inspirational vision through their scholarship, mentorship and service. By drawing on their expertise, experience, and insight, ES&T will be better positioned to more effectively realize its mission today. But perhaps more importantly, their contributions will ensure ES&T’s impact and relevance into the future. We thank both new ECB members and our existing Editorial Advisory Board members for their invaluable service to ES&T and the environmental sciences and engineering community. And because there is always a new future to invent, the work of creating that future is never done, definitionally. Just as the members of this newly named Early Career Board will engage in the important work of addressing tomorrow’s challenges, they too will eventually empower and enable the generations after them to address circumstances that we cannot imagine today. Because the way you repay the past generations the benefits they’ve bestowed is to support and lift the next generations.
