Writing the ‘Year’s work’ article is always a pleasure and a challenge. This year those twin features have been elevated by the conditions imposed by the pandemic; to be sure, many of us have had to adapt all too quickly to conducting our working lives and a good deal of our other lives online. Writing a review article from lockdown is a particular challenge for one who prefers a book with physical pages which can be written on in pen. The pandemic has prompted some publishers to push even further the growing e-book agenda whilst others have been more accommodating of those scholars with more traditional preferences. Thankfully, the challenge has been easily surpassed by the pleasure of reading and engaging with, either on the page or onscreen, the work which was produced by stylisticians and language scholars in 2019. This work demonstrates impressive breadth and depth in terms of both stylistic methodologies and the topics and themes which are investigated. Stylistics, both in the practising of it and in the reading about it, is essentially about discovery. As readers, something which we often want in any piece of writing is for it to speak to the moment of reading, to be a ‘harmonic passage’ beyond its own context or subject matter and also be relevant to now. In writing this article in the lockdown of today, some lines in ‘Defunct address’, Robert Cockcroft’s poem for Walter (Bill) Nash – ‘plywood hammered over friendly windows/or cars, once welcomed, locked in garages’ – speak very much to the moment. This poem is the envoi to Style, Rhetoric and Creativity in Language (Simpson, 2019b), a collection of work by a number of eminent stylisticians in memory of the eminent linguist and literary scholar, Bill Nash.
