The surface temperature of a planet is one of the key parameters that define its potential habitablity. On Earth, the temperature regime sustained by the seawater column provided one of the necessary conditions for the evolution and prosperity of life. Ancient marine chemical sediments such as cherts and carbonates offer an opportunity to reconstruct the seawater temperature throughout geologic history, due to temperature-dependent fractionation of oxygen isotope ratios between the aqueous and mineral species.
