Investigation of the optical nonlinear properties of chlorophyll B using z-scan technique

The nonlinear optical properties of chlorophyll B dissolved in chloroform have been studied using single-beam z-scan technique with a CW Laser at wavelength λ = 635 nm. It was found that the chlorophyll B has a large 3rd nonlinearity. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β and the nonlinear refractive index n2 were estimated from fitting of the experimental data, which was found to be proportional to the concentration of samples. The origin of the nonlinearity properties was discussed. Our results have indicated that the chlorophyll B could be promising candidates for application on nonlinear photonic devices.
