As this issue goes to press, we mark a year that perhaps started with a new vigor, ambitious and resolute in some way to do better—maybe to write more, exercise more, love more, to improve self or world in some manner. In the span of a few months, COVID-19 eclipsed all preconceptions, exacting an unprecedented global toll and challenging our collective capacity to understand and respond. Distinct, and yet set amidst an increasing number and severity of disasters of nature and conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve in ways not yet clear. It has galvanized research efforts, not only in medicine and health sciences, but across the social sciences and humanities.
