While in the last few decades the historiography of the Haitian Revolution has thrived, becoming increasingly central to the histories of the Atlantic World, Trinidadian intellectual C.L.R. James’s The Black Jacobins, first published in 1938 with a second edition published in 1963, remains the classic exploration of the Haitian Revolution. The book’s narrative sweep, elegant prose, and revolutionary force keep readers coming back to it, or encountering it fresh, even as more recent research has transformed our understandings of the events that emanated from Saint Domingue between 1791 and 1804, culminating in the creation of an independent black nation free from slavery.
