This issue of the Journal of Research in Music Education will arrive during a period of great concern and uncertainty for most in the music education profession. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a 2020–2021 school year rife with personal frustrations, institutional challenges, and catastrophic tragedy. These conditions have had an immediate impact on the ways that music is created, consumed, shared, taught, and learned in schools and throughout the world. Despite the precariousness of life in the past year, it has been inspiring to witness how so many in the field have risen to the challenges we face. The outpouring of kindness, care, and solidarity that I have observed among music education professionals in my own community, across the United States, and throughout the world has been astounding. For example, the many groups that have coalesced rapidly within social media spaces for the sake of collaboration and sharing resources is amazing. Although the setbacks and dangers stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic remain, my faith in the ability of music educators and music education scholars to continue to shape our field for the better has never been stronger. I applaud all in the profession for their efforts and look forward to a time when you will be given the genuine acknowledgment and respect you so surely deserve for the ingenious and transformative work that you do.
