Abstract

The death of a parent is likely to be experienced by many psychiatrists during their careers. When this occurs, the psychiatrist’s health and the treatment provided to patients may be affected. This study set out to review literature indexed by the PubMed and PsycINFO databases from the past 30 years for qualitative data pertaining to the effects of parental death on the work and well-being of psychiatrists. No papers pertaining to the effects of parental death on psychiatrists were yielded by this search of scholarly literature. The results of this study suggest that this common phenomenon has remained largely unexplored.
