A small but inspiring group of men’s mental health (i.e., emotional, psychological, and social well-being) scholars are unapologetically working with and on behalf of Black men in the United States. We are carving out unique niches to help disentangle the homogeneity frequently reported among Black men as well as to deepen the science around Black men’s living, learning, and working experiences (Watkins 2019). My work focuses on within-group differences among Black men; how social determinants influence their stress, distress, and depression; and the impact of social media-based interventions aimed at transforming gender norms, enriching mental health, and encouraging Black men to seek social support (Watkins 2019; Watkins et al. 2017). When the APA Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men were issued last fall, they confirmed that (a) the lives of boys and men are heavily influenced by social determinants and (b) research on social determinants (e.g., race, gender, education, income, etc.) should shape how practitioners counsel boys and men. What is often missing from the discussion, however, is a careful consideration of the racialization of gender identity and the residual effects of race on the mental health of Black men in particular. We study Black men “where they are” and explore their mental health in the context of personal and social identity, relationships, power and privilege, and institutional structures—all issues raised in The Guidelines. Though met with opposition by some audiences, like white nationalists—which I watched unfold via social media—researchers and practitioners I know have found The Guidelines useful
