In the study of the twentieth century, the subject of intercommunal violence has risen to prominence since the early 2000s, specifically various forms of anti-Jewish violence in multiethnic Eastern Europe. Most saliently, Jan T. Gross’s Neighbors (2001) narrated the brutal murder of Jews by their Christian neighbours in Jedwabne, south-eastern Poland, on 10 July 1941. Gross’s account generated extensive polemics and led scholars to pay considerable attention to civilian-on-civilian violence and non-Germans’ substantial participation in the Holocaust. We now know that Jedwabne belonged to a broader wave of atrocities
