Oxidative Destruction of Raw-Benzene Components

Abstract

Possible transformations of the components of raw benzene on ozone treatment are studied, for the example of model mixtures. Ozone is found to selectively react with thiophene, with decrease in its content by a factor of 1.5–2.0. In ozonization, tarry oxidation products of thiophene are formed. They are analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in the range 80–600°C. In the oxidation products, peaks in the emission intensity are observed for sulfur-bearing fragments with mass numbers m/z = 35 (H3S), 44 (CS+), 82 (Ar–H2SO3), and 125 (Ar–SO+). This confirms that the oxidation of sulfur compounds by ozone produces sulfoxides and sulfonic acids.
