Growth performance, non‐specific immunity and Vibrio parahaemolyticus resistance of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, in response to various microbial‐derived additives

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various microbial‐derived additives on the growth performance, non‐specific immunity and disease resistance of Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimp were fed diets supplemented with 5 g/kg multi‐species probiotic (MSP), 5 g/kg dried lactic acid bacteria fermentate (LF), 5 g/kg dried yeast fermentate (YF), 7.5 g/kg cell wall‐broken yeast extract (BY), 5 g/kg multi‐enzyme preparation (MEP), or 50 g/kg complex probiotics and enzyme (CPE). Results showed that the specific growth rate of shrimp in all treatment groups, except the LF group, was significantly enhanced (p < .05). The activities of lipase and trypsin in the hepatopancreas of the MSP and MEP groups, and amylase of the BY group, increased significantly (p < .05). The activities of all non‐specific immune enzymes in serum in MSP, BY group and the activity of haemocytes respiratory burst in the MSP, YF, BY and MEP group were significantly increased (p < .05). In the Vibrio challenge test, the cumulative mortality of shrimp in all treatment groups, except MSP group, was significantly lower than in the controls (p < .05). In conclusion, various microbial‐derived additives provided distinct benefits to the growth performance and health of shrimp. Particularly, complex probiotics and enzyme exhibited the all‐round positive influence and significantly improved growth performance, immunity capacity and disease resistance.
