Promoting Scholarly Training in a Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship.

The scientist-practitioner model of clinical psychology promotes integrated training in research and practice. However, many psychologists graduate from their doctoral program with limited exposure to research. Among those who do participate in research during graduate school, psychologists in clinical practice settings often stop conducting scholarly work. Over the past decade, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) developed a scholarly training component as part of a clinically focused postdoctoral psychology fellowship program. This article describes the CHLA approach to promoting the scientist-practitioner model in a hospital and community mental health training setting. The authors examined regularly collected program data from 2004 to 2014 to explore the potential impact of scholarly training on publication success. Results indicated that mentorship may be a particularly important aspect of postdoctoral training in terms of promoting publication success. Over the period since scholarly training has been required and increasingly emphasized, the publication rates for postdoctoral fellows and supervisors have both increased. A description of the program is offered as an example of how other postdoctoral fellowship programs may support trainees in developing complementary clinical and research skills, contribute to the overall vitality of their training programs, and enable their training programs to contribute to the broader scientific community.
