In 1902, Belmar published a list of San Gabriel Mixtepec Zapotec (SGMZ) words and phrases, the only record of this apparently dormant language. This paper presents Belmar’s SGMZ data and interprets his transcriptions to show that SGMZ is very similar to the Santa María Coatlán dialect of Coatec Zapotec, which is spoken some forty kilometers to the northeast, where it likely formed part of a historic dialect chain.
