Côme St-Onge† (1908–1978) was a hunter and lived most of the year in the bush with his family. The original recording of “Sheshiliss” was made by Drapeau in the winter of 1975, and was transcribed by Drapeau and Rita Bacon in 1983. An illustrated version was published in Innu for the Pessamit schools by the band in 1987. This version was modified with respect to the original recording in order to satisfy the requirements of a school setting. For this text series, we returned to the original version, which is lengthier than the school one and somewhat more elaborate in terms of syntax and vocabulary. Since the recording was parsed in Transcriber in 2014, Adélina Bacon performed a new transcription in Innu, as well as a rough translation to French. 1 The version produced for this series, as with the other texts, stays very close to the actual audio recording. The Transcriber transcript in standard orthography was checked by Hélène St-Onge and, more recently, the final text was corrected with Yvette Mollen. Apart from being extremely rich linguistically, the text is interesting because of its European origin. Drapeau has recorded more than a dozen different such tales in Pessamit, ten of which have been analyzed in Drapeau and Lachapelle (2014). They show that “Sheshiliss” is an Innu version of a well-known tale registered as “John the Faithful” in the UTA (for Uther, Thompson, Arne) catalogue (Uther 2004). The tale is part of the Ti-Jean cycle widespread in French-Canadian tales. The character of Ti-Jean is also known as Jean-peaude-morue ‘Codskin-John’. In “Sheshiliss,” St-Onge refers to him as Tshaunnamesh ‘John-Fish’. The title “Sheshiliss” comes from the storyteller himself, who starts his performance with this simple word and pauses to make sure the audience understands it as the title. Sheshil is the Innu phonemicization of French Cécile followed by the Innu diminutive suffix -iss, so Sheshiliss means ‘Little Cecilia’. The tale describes Sheshiliss as a princess (tshishe-utshimashkuess) and her suitor Tshaun-Namesh ‘John-Fish’ as a prince (tshishe-utshimass), his father being the king (tshishe-utshimau) and his mother the queen (tshisheutshimashkueu). So as to leave no doubt on this issue, St-Onge switches twice to French when he speaks of the king as le roi ‘the king’. No doubt a fairy tale in the mouth of a traditional Innu hunter did require such clarification.
