Environmental law is stuck in a stalemate between dynamic progression and stagnation. Public opinion is deeply concerned with environmentalism,11 yet as of late, governments across the globe can be seen to be pushing back against environmental law.22 It was not until a procrastinating scroll through Facebook led me to find the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goal merchandise, that I began to think about what an answer to this stalemate could be.33 To see the UN promoting awareness of the 2015 goals on social media seemed initially strange, yet given the additional hours we have all clocked up on Facebook, shows the existence of a very coherent marketing strategy from the UN to raise awareness of these goals. But this, in turn, raises its own question, why now, in the middle of a global pandemic? In June, the UN published their Comprehensive Response to COVID-19, a document centred on the three pillars of ‘saving lives, protecting societies and recovering better’.44 The response draws upon the objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals published in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.55
