Will Better Theories Help Natasha? Two Recent HRDR Articles Address the State of Research in Our Field
Human Resource Development Review ( IF 4.6 ) Pub Date : 2020-06-02 , DOI: 10.1177/1534484320922332
K. Peter Kuchinke

Jia Wang’s recent call for increased attention to scholarship that spans disciplinary boundaries (Wang, 2019) is a timely and important reminder in light of the challenges and opportunities for our field in the current economic, technological, social, and intellectual landscape. Increased dialogue, however, should also occur in our own domain where scholars typically push forward their own areas of interest and not often engage in substance with each other. The recent publication of two major articles by senior human resource development (HRD) scholars in this journal provides such an opportunity. Both are significant pieces of research by keen observers of our field, each with more than 25 years of scholarly excellence in HRD and teaching at leading Big Ten universities. The key authors and I were brethren-in-arms during our graduate program at the University of Minnesota, both are close colleagues and friends, and I have a deep sense of respect for their careers and scholarship. The following is intended as a discussion and extension: a way of connecting two exemplary pieces of writing that inform each other in interesting ways and, taken together, offer important directions for our field.
