The author places greater focus on the patient’s defenses being against paranoia than against the specific element of envy. She addresses Kwalwasser’s question (this issue) of why it was that she was unable to see her patient’s behavior as defensive, and suggests that the analyst’s model of working made it difficult for her to separate herself and her patient sufficiently in order to find a place in her mind in which to think. The author takes a clinical example from the paper to illustrate the differences in understanding and the technical differences between her approach and that of Kwalwasser.
