Cultural sensitivity and attitudes towards refugees of Turkish nursing students: A cross sectional descriptive study

The aim of this study was to determine cultural sensitivities and attitudes towards refugees of Turkish nursing students and clarify factors affecting these relationships. This was a cross-sectional, comparative, descriptive study. The study sample comprised of 412 nursing students in Hatay, Turkey. The mean score of the respondents as measured by the culturally sensitive was of 91.20 ± 12.15. The total mean scores of Attitudes towards Syrian Refugees Scale ranged from 30.42–85.78 (M = 58 ± 12; SD = 7.38). There was a positive relationship between total scores of culturally sensitive and attitudes towards refugee (r = 0.211, p < 0.001). It is suggested that nursing students score of intercultural sensitivity increased as their positive attitudes level increased too. Based on this findings, the study recommended that nursing education must evolve with changing world needs. In this study, the level of intercultural sensitivity of the students’ needs improvement specifically attitude toward refugees.
