The three sections mentioned above are likely to appeal to slightly different academic specialties; each section is self-contained, and my one slight criticism of this book is that the three parts are so separate as to render the book somewhat less coherent as a whole. The study also has wider implications which bear on the relationship between thought, language and social actions. A strength is the breadth of different contexts across time and geographical locations with which Charteris-Black deftly illustrates his arguments. His detailed research is everywhere apparent, and evidenced also in multiple quotations from literature of all kinds, which makes this a fascinating read. The author has cast his net wide, not bound by any limits of historical time or geographical space. In doing so, he has discovered certain proof that fire is a productive domain, lexically and semantically, for metaphor, and that this holds true across many very different cultures and eras. Charteris-Black has produced a work which for the sheer amount of scholarship and creative thought packed into its 238 pages is both awe-inspiring and authoritative.
