convincingly demonstrates how both OND and OED are reciprocally related to the cultural, political and social identity of the Israeli state. Chapter 6 sums up the central findings and – through a reading of Hegel – suggests a possible alternative to the fixed and stagnated discourses that currently characterise status quo, that is, a more ecological discourse that might be able to transcend the discourses of estrangement and normalisation. With this volume Friedman and Gavriely-Nuri provide an original theoretical contribution to the field of Discourse Analysis, convincingly showing how occupation normalisation and estrangement discourses progress dialectically; how they feed of each other by challenging, redefining and incorporating elements from each other. Exactly therein lies the core of the book’s theoretical argument, namely that the very nature of social conflict discourse is dialectic. As each side of the conflict attempts to enlist a set of values in order to serve its ends, each part of the conflict not only seeks to distance the other from these values, but it constitutes its own identity through the negation of the other. By synthesising seminal work from CDA and adding to it a dialectic element, this important theoretical contribution brings with it a set of new and expanded analytical tools, whose utility the authors prove by the original and insightful conclusions they are able to draw from the empirical analysis. This theoretical and methodological contribution to the field of discourse analysis is promising for developing the field and for the possibility of understanding prolonged, intractable identity conflicts between social groups. Because this framework is developed though an analysis of Israeli discourse, future research that take a DDA approach could possibly test how this framework is apt for studying conflict within groups. Applying DDA as a framework for analysing social group fragmentation and related notions such as ‘deviants’, ‘apostates’, ‘traitors’, and ‘heretics’, might yield new insights into how dialectic processes work internally within social groups. In light of the original theoretical and methodological contribution Friedman and Gavriely-Nuri offers, this volume is a must-read for experienced discourse analysts as well as scholars interested in social group conflict.
